remarks: As only the response of Margaret Frowyke survives from this case, it is not possible to tell if Thomas is suing Margaret to enforce a contract of marriage, or if Margaret is suing Thomas to establish clearly that they are not married.
1492-06-08: Margaret Frowyke, Response of Defendant
Responds that she rejected Thomas Philpott`s marriage proposals on account of being affianced to another man for the previous five years. Responds that they exchanged gifts, but not in the name of marriage. Denies ever having called him her husband. Responds that Philpott often visited her in her father`s house, calling her his wife. Responds that fame circulated in Barnet and neighbouring places about this, but only because Philpott spread the rumour.
